My new job at Rubicon Project

Rubicon Project LogoIf you haven't heard the news yet, I am leaving my current job at the Los Angeles Urban League after a good three years with the company. At the league, I was at times a youth mentor, interview coach, webmaster, and then also found some time to do my regular job of fixing computers and providing technical support as a member of the IT department.

However, I recently received an amazing opportunity to join up with The Rubicon Project, an internet company with a "mission to automate the $65 billion global online advertising industry." There I will be working alongside their Engineering Team doing Quality Assurance for the Project's platform. It's a great new opportunity to work with great new people, but it's also bitter sweet to leave a place you have been working at for a little while. To all my coworkers at the League, good luck to all of you. And to all my new coworkers at Rubicon, I look forward to meeting all of you.

If you want to know more about the company, I've enclosed a Youtube video of the Rubicon Project's HQ after the jump:Read more...Collapse )

On Saturday Night, I went with my friend Kai to check out the Manifest Equality art show in Hollywood. It was a fun event featuring all sorts of modern art and a special guest, Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas. Check out the rest of the photos below (I only had my iPhone at the time, so the pictures aren't great).

My mom on the news discussing Black Friday

It's an old news story, but ABC didn't have embeds when this came out. My mom (lady with glasses at the left) is in the end of this piece doing Tai chi and asking people to not shop, but exercise.

I talk a little about Watchmen on NBC 4 LA

I was on the NBC 4 Los Angeles local news talking a little bit about the Watchmen film, which was pretty good, and got to show off my tickets over at Universal City Walk. I don't know much about the original book, but it is considered the greatest graphic novel of all time The characters look amazing and it seems like they captured all of the best parts of the novel. That being said, some scenes go on and are often overly violent. Still, even if you aren't a fan of superhero movies, this is still a film to see.

Civics Quiz

Civics Quiz- Man I'm getting rusty. I missed 7 of these. Not good, but better than average (which was also not good).

Black Man Given Nation's Worst Job

From the Onion:
African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation's broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, "It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can't catch a break."

What I'm voting for

This is how I'll be voting this election.

  • President- Barack Obama

  • Proposition 1A (High Speed Rail)- Yes

  • Proposition 2 (Animal Confinement Standards)- Yes

  • Proposition 8 (Gay Marriage Ban)- No

  • Measure R (LA Transportation funding Sales Tax Increase)- Yes

And after I vote, I'd like to pick up my free Krispy Kreme donut and Starbucks coffee, though it may not be legal here in California.

We Can Do This Video

So the Los Angeles Urban League, my employer, put together a celebratory video called "We Can Do This." If it seems familiar, it's probably because it resembles the Will.I.Am "Yes We Can Video". They then showed this video at the big event called the Whitney Young Dinner last week. I was also asked to be in the video, though my part is only about a second (from the 2:36 mark). You may however recognize some of the people who have bigger parts in the video.

I didn't vote in the California primary on Super Tuesday, mainly, because I was okay with either Clinton or Obama winning the nomination. However, Hillary Clinton lately has been getting rather desperate to try to win the nomination, but as Olbermann says, "Do you not see, Senator?... this is not a campaign strategy. This is a suicide pact."

The domestic violence program at my workplace, the Los Angeles Urban League, put together these PSAs for the public. They'll be shown today at the Pan African Film Festival.
